2024 Was a Beautiful Mess, Let's Revisit
A quick look back at our first year together. Plus: we're open for submissions!
We’re not big believers in the magic of New Year’s eve. When everything of the previous year is washed away, and everyone gets to start over new at the stroke of midnight. As women who live and die by the lunar calendar, our “fresh start” happens closer to Spring.
In winter, we rest. We reflect. We insulate and cuddle. It’s a good time to let what needs to die go and nurture what we want to grow.
However, what January 1st provides is an opportunity to look back at what we’ve done over the course of the calendar year and set intentions for the next. 2024 not only brought us together as co-editors of this lovely space but also as co-creators of the world we want to see.
We imagined a world where writers could write hard things. Our Take Care series was a handful of resources specifically for writers navigating the topic of SA and other types of abuse. It was our way of celebrating Tiffany’s book Pack Light and the bravery of every writer who has ever put their pain on the page as a means of liberation from it.
We imagined our way through difficult truths after the election, when deflated Black women everywhere were questioning the future. What Was Said is an intimate peek inside the voice notes exchanged between four friends processing how they feel about the election results and the state of hope.
We imagined a dialogue with women who have made radical changes in their lives and lived to tell about it. Whitney McGuire helped us usher this new vision to life with our quarterly series The Shift— which will return this winter.
In 2025, we’ll keep this space as a digital sounding board, where we manifest the kind of storytelling that brings us closer to ourselves and each other in a world that wants to divide us. More soon.
Cool news for creatives
This year, one of the intentions we’re setting is to build with our community. So we’re excited to announce we’re open to submissions for micro-essays, poetry, and photo submissions. Thanks to our growing paid subscriber community, all submissions will be paid. Learn more about submissions here.
Most of all, we want to say thank you to everyone who has spent time here, read an essay or two, shared content on their timeline, left comments, or sent thoughtful emails. We appreciate each and every subscriber.
